Cut Rice Paper Sculpture

Bovey Lee is the artist behind these cut rice paper sculptures. Cut paper sculptures are from a traditional Chinese artform that were popular among generations of women from rural areas. However, they focused their craft on their bonds within their families and community rather than fame and fortune. Inspired by the paper cuttings her father used to give her, Lee began cutting her own art in 2005. Though many of her art pieces were based on creations by folk, Chinese artists, her style was also influenced by other artforms, such as Japanese woodblock prints.

I chose this papercraft because of the intricate and meticulous effort the artist has put in. I was captivated by the thought and process one must follow to complete something so detailed like this. I also find the contrast between the white and the cut out parts, or the "negative" parts, of the sculpture very pretty. One of my personal preferences is when the base colour of an artpiece is white. I'm used to using dark colours, like gray and black, for lineart. That is why the use of white paper is very appealing to me.
