Born From the Past

The camera is a beautiful demonstration of how designs adapt and grow from ideas from the past. Karim Rashid used the camera as an example of how designs tend to follow the original form. The function of its rectangular shape, for example, was to allow space for the film. However, Rashid's statement about digital cameras and how they don't need film anymore made me question myself. How I would feel if I came across something that I'm so familiar with, like a digital camera, that still has the same function but drastically looks different. Would I find it more appealing, or hate it?

That also made me question why designers tend to just work around the original form. Is it because it's easier to just make small changes? Are they worried about how the mass will react to it?

Yet there are many designers who push and bend what people find objectively normal and aesthetically pleasing. They may succeed or they may fail. But that's the point of being a designer. You try and try again, whether it's a winning design or not.
