Self Supporting 3D Object

Image
Final Project        Our final project is to make a self supporting 3D object. It is basically what we have been preparing for the entire term. However, there are a lot of things to keep in mind because of the limitations of the 3D printers. The following screen shots are some of the samples and ideas I had for my object.   CONCEPTS:      Because the 3D printers cannot handle printing anything with shallow angles, I was thinking of making something without a flat top, like a star. However, because the star would have to balance on points, I ended cutting off the bottom "legs" of the star, making it look more like a skinny maple leaf.             At this point, I was decided to play around with lofting instead to avoid issues with angles and support. Since the tops were flat, I was thinking of just adding a pyramidal shape or leaving my object open when it came to choosing which design I liked the mos...

Product: Vision

Image
The object I made is called a vision from the game Genshin Impact. My idea was to make it so the gems inside the ring were replaceable, a nod to how different characters hold different gems based on what element they can control. I made gems for wind (anemo) and rock (geo) users. The design I chose for the ring is specifically found in the land of the god of wind. The single wing is also detachable because it is only found in one character's vision, the god of wind. I made one side of the ring have blue accents to indicate it is for the wind element, while the other side has black accents for the other elements.  The following images are some samples of my template and some Rhino renders:      The render above is for the wing and the designs at the bottom of the ring. It is also the offset layer I made after I made the prototype because I had to expose some flaps of the ring so that gluing is more secure.

I noticed that a lot of my tabs were not big enough to fully support the parts they were supposed to connect to. As I proceed with my project, I plan to make my tabs a little bigger. The proportions I initially printed were also smaller than what I wanted so I will have to reprint them in a bigger size.

Cut Rice Paper Sculpture

Image
Bovey Lee is the artist behind these cut rice paper sculptures. Cut paper sculptures are from a traditional Chinese artform that were popular among generations of women from rural areas. However, they focused their craft on their bonds within their families and community rather than fame and fortune. Inspired by the paper cuttings her father used to give her,  Lee began cutting her own art in 2005. Though many of her art pieces were based on creations by folk, Chinese artists, her style was also influenced by other artforms, such as Japanese woodblock prints.         I chose this papercraft because of the intricate and meticulous effort the artist has put in. I was captivated by the thought and process one must follow to complete something so detailed like this. I also find the contrast between the white and the cut out parts, or the "negative" parts, of the sculpture very pretty. One of my personal preferences is when the base colour of an ar...
